Celebrating Memorial Moms

With Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday, May 14th, be sure to treat the special mom in your life to sleeping in late, breakfast in bed or even a dozen red roses to show her you care. We reached out to a couple of Memorial moms to catch a glimpse of their lives and how they plan to celebrate the special day.

The Burke Family: Caroline, David, Meredith, Missy and Maddie.

Missy Burke

Memorial Area Ties: My husband, David, and I both grew up in West Houston.

Family: David and I met through friends. We have three daughters: Maddie, Caroline and Meredith. My family and I really enjoy traveling as much as we can. We love the mountains and any place the girls can snow ski. New Mexico is a favorite for us. We also enjoy the outdoors, biking and running and taking our golden retriever Molly on long walks. We love grilling by the pool with close friends and family whenever we can as well. We love to entertain. My husband is quite the cook and really enjoys cooking for others.

The Kids: My oldest daughter, Maddie, is a freshman at Stratford High School. My middle daughter, Caroline, is in seventh grade at Spring Forest Middle, and my youngest daughter, Meredith, is in third grade at Meadow Wood Elementary. It does get crazy at times with three girls. Trying to juggle their activities, schools, carpools, sports and social lives is definitely a full-time job and hectic at times, but I wouldn’t change a thing, and it is also a lot of fun. Our front door is pretty much revolving most of the time with girls of all ages coming and going.

The Best Part About Being a Mom: I love everything about being a mom. I come from a family of three girls, so it’s really fun to be raising three girls like my parents did. I think reliving so many of the things that I experienced as a young girl through my girls again has to be one of the best parts about being a mom.

Ideal Mother’s Day: It would probably be a quiet day at home with my family hanging out by the pool. A day at a spa or to just have my house to myself for the day would be great too!

The Weir Family: Eric, Kate, Reece, Shannon and Luke.

Shannon Weir

Memorial Area Ties: My husband, Eric, grew up in Memorial. His parents and both of his sisters still reside in Memorial as well. We have lived in Memorial since 2007.

Family: Eric and I have been married 19 years this September. We met in Houston while I was a student at the University of Houston. Eric had just moved back into town after playing a few years of football for the New York Giants. We married two years later. We have three children: Reece, 15, Kate, 13, and Luke, 10. We have two awesome dogs, Sammy and Duke. Eric works in the energy field, and I am a local artist.

The Kids: Reece is a freshman at Memorial High School and has recently discovered a great interest in photography. She has an amazing eye for it. Kate, a sixth grader, plays tennis and takes hip-hop. She loves everything she tries and has a huge heart. Kate has Down syndrome, which does not hold her back from anything. She is mainstreamed at Memorial Middle School, where she has met many wonderful new friends. Luke is in fourth grade at Frostwood Elementary. He has a passion for all sports including football, basketball, baseball and golf. He is also the kid that you will always see riding his bike around the neighborhood with his friends.

The Best Part About Being a Mom:  I love the sense of fulfillment I get knowing that it is my job to raise my children to be kind, thoughtful, hard working, compassionate and generous adults.

Ideal Mother’s Day: My family makes fun of me for this, but I ask for it at least once a year. I love a family bike ride to Turkish Grill – Kate’s favorite.  It is as simple as that.
